Creating Dropdown Menus in Your Main Menu

Summary: This guide walks you through the steps to create a dropdown menu by adding child links to a parent menu item in Sites, effectively organizing related links to improve navigation and user experience.

Before You Begin

  • You must have the necessary permissions to access and modify Sites Menus.
  • The Parent Menu Item must already exist in your main navigation.
  • The main heading (parent menu item) of the dropdown will not be clickable; only the sub-links will function as destinations.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1.  Click on Sites from your main navigation.

2.  Select Menus from the left navigation.

3.  Locate the main menu item that you want to turn into a dropdown menu. Hover over it.

4.  Click the More menu (three dots ...) that appears on the right and Select Add Link from the dropdown. [This creates the first sub-link.]

5.  Enter the display text for the sub-link into the Label field.

6.  Select the destination in the Link To field (a page from the dropdown or a custom URL).

7.  Click the Save Link button.

8.  Repeat Steps 4-7 to add all remaining sub-links to the dropdown menu.

9.  Click Re-order and then Click, drag and drop the re-order handle next to each sub-link to change the order.

Troubleshooting & FAQs

  • My main menu heading is not clickable: This is expected behavior. The main heading (parent item) of a dropdown is only a label for organization, and only the sub-links will function as clickable destinations.
  • How do I link an external website in the dropdown? In Step 6, Select Custom from the Link To dropdown, and Enter the full external URL. You may also want to Toggle Open in New Tab on.
