Why People is Unable to Map Certain Addresses

Summary: This guide explains why the message "Sorry, we are unable to map this address" appears in a person's profile—it occurs when the third-party mapping service cannot achieve a 90% or higher confidence rating due to inaccuracies like typos or PO Boxes, and offers a tip for forcing a map result.

Before You Begin

  • The map is only displayed when the address achieves a 90% or higher accuracy rating from our third-party mapping service.
  • Inaccurate matches (e.g., "Drive" instead of "Dr") are rejected to prevent displaying inaccurate results.
  • This feature requires a valid street address; it won't map PO Boxes.
  • Note on International Mapping: Currently, our in-app mapping feature is optimized exclusively for addresses within the United States and Canada. Organizations located outside these regions will see the notification: "Sorry, we're unable to map your address."

  • To view an international location, simply save the address to the contact record. Once saved, click the address link directly; this will open the location for you in Google Maps.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1.  Locate the profile displaying the "Sorry, we are unable to map this address" message.

2.  Check the address for typos (e.g., street abbreviations) and correct any inaccuracies.

3.  Open the address in the profile for editing.

4.  Resave the address without making changes (if you didn't find any errors). [Sometimes, resaving the address will force the map to appear immediately.]

5.  Wait up to 24-48 hours (if the address was added via a bulk import). [Latitude/Longitude for bulk imports are queued and calculated over a period of time, not right away.]

Nuances to the Map Address Feature

  • Accuracy Threshold: The map only displays if the third-party mapping service provides an accuracy rating of 90% or higher.
  • Bulk Imports vs. Individual Saves: When saving an individual profile, the latitude/longitude is calculated immediately. For bulk imports, calculation is queued and takes up to 24-48 hours.
  • Geocod.io Nuance: The mapping provider will only look for the first two names in a city name to attempt to map the location.
  • Country Matching: The country setting for the account must match the country of the address being mapped (this is less applicable for North American accounts).
