Managing Invalid and Multiple Email Addresses on Profiles

Managing Invalid and Multiple Email Addresses on Profiles

Summary: Learn how Tithely validates email addresses to ensure accurate formatting and a single email per field, and understand where to find previous invalid or multiple emails that were moved to profile notes during our system cleanup.

Before You Begin

  • You will need permission to view and edit people's profiles in order to update email addresses or view profile notes.
  • Tithely now requires all email addresses to use a standard, valid format (e.g., name@domain.com).
  • The email field now only supports one single email address per field.
  • September 22 Update: To ensure emails reliably reach the right addresses, Tithely transitioned to a single-email format. Any existing multiple or invalid emails were automatically preserved as a Note on the person's profile.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Navigate to a person's profile and click to edit the section containing their email address.
  2. Enter a single, properly formatted email address into the Email Field.
If the email is missing characters (like a period or the "@" symbol) or contains multiple email addresses separated by commas, an "invalid email format" warning will display and prevent you from saving the profile.
  3. Click Save once the valid email is entered.
To retrieve any historical email data that was removed during our system cleanup, click into the Notes section on the person's profile.

Troubleshooting & FAQs

  • Why am I getting an "invalid email format" error when trying to save a profile? The email entered is either formatted incorrectly (such as "google com" instead of "google.com") or you are trying to enter multiple email addresses into a single field. You must enter just one valid email address per field in order to save successfully.
  • Where did the extra email addresses go if a person previously had multiple listed in one field? During our September 22 data migration, profiles containing multiple emails were updated to retain only the first valid email address in the email field. All additional email addresses were safely moved to a newly generated Note on the person's profile so no data was lost.
  • What happened to invalid email addresses that were previously saved on a profile? If an email address was completely invalid, it was removed from the email field and placed into a Note on the person's profile. The note will state: "Prior to a data migration, this profile had an invalid email address stored in the email field," and will list the exact text of the invalid entry so you can reference and correct it.
  • Can I edit the Note containing the old email data? Not at this time. The system-generated notes containing the migrated multi-address or invalid email data are currently not editable by anyone. This capability will remain locked until a future date when editing will be enabled.
